Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Technology
Program Description
The Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Technology (HVAC) curriculum provides the basic knowledge needed to develop the skills necessary to work with residential and light commercial systems.
Topics include mechanical refrigeration, heating and cooling theory, electricity, controls, and safety. The degree program covers air conditioning, furnaces, heat pumps, tools and instruments.
Graduates should be able to assist in the start-up, preventive maintenance, service, repair, and/or installation of residential and light commercial systems

- Students will demonstrate a basic understanding of core competencies which apply to the residential air conditioning, heating and refrigeration industry.
- Students will demonstrate good wiring practices and the ability to read simple wiring diagrams.
- Students will be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of the installation, operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of residential and light commercial heating equipment.
- Students will be able to use psychometrics, manufacturer specifications, and test instruments to determine proper system operations.
- Students will demonstrate a basic understanding of the installation, operation, and maintenance of residential and light commercial heat pump systems.
- Students will be able to assist in installing and testing refrigeration systems and perform simple repairs.
- Students will be able to diagnose and repair common residential and commercial comfort system controls
- Students will be able to adjust, maintain, and service HVAC equipment.
- Students will be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of refrigerant recovery, recycling, and reclamation laws and practices as well as be prepared for the EPA certification exam.
- Students will be able to present themselves to customers in a professional manner, understand how the business operates, complete invoices and handle customer complaints.
- Students will be able to design a basic residential heating and cooling system.
Students enrolled in pre-approved continuing education training courses may request awarded credit in corresponding curriculum programs. They must first register, pay, and pass the continuing education course with a grade of satisfactory. In order to request awarded credit, the student must be enrolled in the corresponding curriculum program.
The credit will be awarded by the appropriate department with a grade of “PR”, Credit for Prior Learning. The credit hours of the course will count toward graduation at VGCC but may not transfer to other colleges or universities.
