Office Administration

Office administration today is not simply the old cliché position of previous decades but rather a challenging and rewarding career field. The Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Handbook reports that administrative assistants (AAs) “perform a variety of clerical and administrative duties that are necessary to run an organization efficiently. They use computer software to create spreadsheets; manage databases; and prepare presentations, reports, and documents. They also may negotiate with vendors, buy supplies, and manage stockrooms or corporate libraries. Secretaries and administrative assistants also use videoconferencing, fax, and other office equipment. Specific job duties vary by experience, job title, and specialty.” Administrative assistants, in other words, do any and everything in the office. As the saying goes, variety is the spice of life so AAs get to live it up each day.

Our Office Administration (OA) curriculum prepares students for careers in the exciting field of administrative support. The OA program of study includes course work in technical skills as well as highly sought after soft skills. Rigorous courses groom students for today’s fast-paced, dynamic, and modern electronic office environment whether a traditional onsite or a virtual offsite location. Requisite courses in imperative areas such as integrated computer software, oral and written communication, records management, document formatting and production, as well as customer service and critical thinking are all part of the OA curriculum.

Graduates should qualify for employment in a variety of positions in business, government, and industry ranging from entry-level to supervisor to middle management. Essentially all businesses require some type of administrative support so all industries are on the table for consideration in this career field including retail, manufacturing, financial, and education to name a few.
